This is Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who landed on the island at the southern tip of Malaya and and founded the city of Singapore (now Republic of Singapore). By the time he left the country in 1823, the city was on its way to become the largest port in the world.
In Singapore and in other parts of the world, his name lives on in numerous entities, like Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, Raffles Boulevard, Raffles Hotel, Raffles Place MRT Station to name a few.

I have a picture of me, taken never-mind-how-many years ago (!) sitting in the garden at Raffles Hotel, drinking my first ever Singapore Sling! It brings back wonderful memories of Singapore.
you forgot to mention that he 'founded' singapore in 1819. tat's a year etched in memory. every history lesson of modern Singapore begins with the arrival of Raffles and his East India Company. If I am remembering them correctly. ;-)
