Today is my friend's birthday. I took this picture at Pasir Ris Park, where we celebrated his birthday over grilled fish, chicken and pork. I wanted to take a shot of the beach just after sunset, but I was too busy playing (meaning, losing) poker with my friends.

If I'm not mistaken, this plant is called Birds of Paradise. According to my mother, it is very easy to maintain this plant. This is probably the reason why it is common to see this plant in Singapore.

A tribute to a Filipina Artist

The first time I came across the name “Pacita Abad” was from a Singapore brochure. Since then I wanted to see the bridge that she painted and although I know that it is somewhere near Clarke Quay, I never found it till now.

Pacita Abad is a Filipina modern painter. From her website I’ve learned that she has painted 3500 artworks including this bridge. The Alkaff Bridge is a 55m bridge that crosses Singapore River. Pacita painted this bridge last January, 2004, after she had undergone treatment for cancer.

Late post: I was in Manila during the weekend. Sorry for the late post. This was taken in Istana Park. It's my first time to see this kind of flower. The tree itself isn't anything spectacular, but the flower really is unbelievably unique. Perfect for macro photography, even for non-macro lens users like me.

I just want to show you the best thing I admire about this country, it is how different cultures co-exist in harmony. This temple as built 1859 A.D., which is one of the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. It is also located at Tank Road.

I just found out that there are at least 7 Chinese dialects in Singapore, one of them is Teochew. Based on Wikepedia, 22.5% of the Chinese population in Singapore are (or speaks) Teochew.

Clean and Green

When I took this picture, one of the cleaners approached me and said that I should take picture of beautiful places and not this one. I told him that those places will not remain beautiful if not for them. Littering is beginning to be a problem for Singapore. I saw on TV that the Singapore government has announced their Clean & Green Campaign, and they are starting it in schools. They also tapped the help of students to address the problem with littering. Some students were sent to Orchard with leaflets and trash bins to discourage people to litter. If I were the government, I will also give rewards to the cleaners, because I think they are doing a very good job in keeping Singapore clean.

Haze (November Theme Day)

For almost a month now, Singapore has been covered with haze caused by forest fire in Indonesia. The psi rating climbed to more than 130 psi. The past few days, the psi levels are going down. Hopefully, the haze will disappear soon.

This toilet has been certified by the National Environment Agency. Well, if you ask me, I will give it two thumbs up! Aside from its cleanliness, it also provides a "dry" space to put your things (which is very important for me if I have my camera with me). It has a hand dryer and an automatic soap dispenser.

Last Tuesday, my housemates invite me to have dinner at the hawker beside Esplanade. On our way back, we found this band playing some alternative music. It was a free concert! We decided to finish the show. They were good, but sorry guys I forgot the name of the band.

Although most Singaporeans live in a high rise building, either in a condominium or a HDB flat, they seem to love taking care of plants. They usually put it outside thier doors. One of my neighbor has a pine tree outside thier door, and they live on the seventh floor. I wonder how they are going to bring it down.

Last Saturday, we went to Pasir Ris Park. To my surprise, I saw a man fishing using a net. Fishing is common in this side of Singapore, but most of them use fishing rods. It is more of a hobby to them, but this one, I think it is his way of life.

For the whole month of September, I tried to look for this kind of taxi. The other day, as I was looking at my window, I saw one. Without hesitation, I grabbed my camera and took few shots. Then I tried to run down, to get a better angle, but it left before I reached the parking lot.

One of Sentosa's attraction that is on my "must-try" list. It is something like a soapbox kart (or maybe it is by definition). Instead of having motor, it rely on gravity. And you have to take the "sky-ride" to go back to the starting line. My only comment is that the track is too short (for me).

Tie the knot

Since I just tied the knot recently, one topic that interests me are weddings. How it is done, who should you invite, what gifts to give, things like that. I learned that here in Singapore, it is usual for a Christian wedding to have a separate reception and dinner. Not everyone who is in the wedding are invited in the dinner. Well as for our case, the reception and the dinner (sometimes lunch) are usually the same. And once you are in the wedding, you are also invited in the reception. And guest count is at least 100 persons, some go to as much as 500+ guests. Ours were only 300 guests.

My wife and I went to the Pasir Ris Park, very near to where I currently live. During weekends, you can see a lot of families there, bicycling, having picnics and just plain hanging around the park. It's also a very good bonding time, like this family who opted to rent a 'two-seater' bike. Looks fun!

One thing I like about Singapore are the taxi drivers. They are nice and very interesting. Most taxis in Singapore accept credit cards but drivers usually prefer cash. Our driver last night hates it when the fare is only 3SGD and his passenger wants to pay for it via his card. =)

Funan IT Mall

There are two malls in Singapore where most techies go for shopping, The Sim Lim Center and Funan IT Mall. I prefer going to Funan, Sim Lim is just too crowded. And sometimes, the sales persons in Sim Lim are too pushy.

Here's a tip, if you are planning to buy a gadget in Singapore, be sure to research first, then short list your options. There are times, salesmen don't have enough patience if you ask too many models. And search for the cheapest price!

Philippines is now being hit by a strong typhoon named Milenyo. As a result, many parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces are flooded. There are also reports that most parts of Luzon don't have electricity.

I'm very concerned since my wife lives in Antipolo and my parents live in Bulacan, both provinces are very near Manila. I guess there is nothing more I can do now but pray. I hope everyone (not only my loved ones) will be kept from harm.

These are weeds which usually can be found in sidewalks. Whenever I see one, I always wish I have my camera with me. I do find them beautiful. So last weekend, I was walking in North Bridge Road, and I saw these. Without hesitation, I dropped on the sidewalk, almost lying down to take its picture. I like it, although I did not manage to get all of them in focus. Only one is in focus, I think.

Looking for a different way of exploring Singapore? Singapore Duck Tours (that's how they call it) use amphibious vehicle that let them travel both in land and water. The main idea was to explore the city and Singapore River using the same vehicle. But it is not for me. I still think that walking is the best way to explore Singapore. It is a small city anyway. And the S$33 per head price tag is too high. It looks cool, though.

Back home, every Sunday most Filipinos go to either church, malls or both. Well, there are even malls that have catholic masses every Sunday morning so you don't have to choose. Me and my wife usually go there.

Orchard Parksuites
If I will win the lottery, this is one of the service apartments I will definitely consider. Located near Orchard MRT, everything is within your reach. But of course, it comes with a price (almost anything near Orchard comes with a steep price).
But it is not the building nor the service that captured my attention, it is its beautiful gate.

Singapore Marriot Hotel

If I were to create a list of most interesting buildings here in Singapore, the Marriot Hotel would be on the top of my list, with its distinct pagoda style design. Whenever I go to Orchard Road, Marriot Hotel never fails to fascinate me. I like how the old looking pagoda stands out with the rest of modern shopping malls and hotels in the area (although this picture does not show it, maybe i'll try to take a wider shot of this building next time) BTW, I read in their website that they're going to be upgrading the guest rooms soon where there's gonna be a brand new 32" LCD TV's in all guest rooms! v.cool!

This is one of the last pictures from my kit lens. I was told that it is beyond economical repair. Honestly, I don't really love that lens, it is too slow, focal length is limited, pictures not sharp enough. But it does the job.. And for a newbie like me, it is a good first lens.

Lately, Singapore is very aggressive on developing plans for the Marina Bay area. In the near future, you can see a casino, hotels and 3 gardens (I think some part will be an indoor garden) around this area. They expect to finish it by 2010.

I made some "$@#$@" mistake, and now my lens have some moisture inside. I need to go to town to have it fixed.

I'm sure some of you have already seen numerous pictures of the Esplanade, just wanted to show you guys how truly amazing it is up close.

From Wikipedia: The total cost of constructing the Esplanade is estimated at SGD 1 billion including the estimated land value and SGD 660 million for the building costs. It's Durian shaped (we have the Durian fruit too, back in Manila, it smells awful but a lot of people love the taste. personally, I don't get that. I mean, 75% of what we taste is actually due to our sense of smell, so, really...how can it taste good? hehe! sorry to durian lovers!), and is Singapore's most iconic performing arts centre.

This was taken last weekend at Pasir Ris Park. Luckily, the sky is quite ok that day but I still have to adjust the contrast in Picasa. Singapore sky is usually pale.

Fields of gold

Everyone has their own fields of gold. For some, it is their dream job, others consider finishing their studies as their fields of gold. Some get it from material things, other will believe that a smile from someone they helped will mean more. For others who will try to climb the highest mountain, others will be content in the arms of their loved ones. No matter what it is, one thing will remain. It will never be easy, we will be tested before we have it.

Since Singapore is a small country, the goverment decided to put up high rise housing units called HDB (actually HDB is the goverment institution that manage this housing units, short from Housing Development Board). Anywhere in Singapore you can find many of this HDB. Most of the new ones have amenities comparable to condominium units

Escape Theme Park

Ever since I moved to Pasir Ris, about 4 months ago, I always wanted to visit this place. And I never did or at least not yet.

Based on thier website, they have many attractions but the only attaction I'm really looking forward is their Daytona Beginner's Track. I hope one day I can escape from my work and visit this theme park.

I rarely had a time to "blog-hop" but whenever I had a chance, Akita Daily Photo was on my "to-visit" list. Last night, I was surprised to learn that Midnite had considered quitting. I must admit that for once I thought about it. So I guess I can understand how it feels. But I hope she won't quit. Nonetheless, thank you for showing us your world.

Here is the facade of the oldest fire station in Singapore. Inside you can see displays of antique fire engines, and they even have customised interactive stations for a close-up experience of what fire fighters and rescuers undergo in an operation.

Mr. Raffles

This is Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who landed on the island at the southern tip of Malaya and and founded the city of Singapore (now Republic of Singapore). By the time he left the country in 1823, the city was on its way to become the largest port in the world.

In Singapore and in other parts of the world, his name lives on in numerous entities, like Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, Raffles Boulevard, Raffles Hotel, Raffles Place MRT Station to name a few.

One of my stock photos, I took this while window shopping in a Mall and found that they have a small program of sorts. One thing I like about Singapore is the diversity. Singaporeans consist of 3 races, Chinese, Malay and as seen in this picture, Indians. My wife says she loves watching Indian dances, because they're so colorful and lively.
